A miner’s body has been recovered from the collapsed coal mine in the Sanjidi area, about 40 kilometers from Quetta. The collapse, caused by a gas buildup, trapped 12 workers underground, according to Chief Inspector of Mines Abdul Ghani Baloch.
More than 12 hours after the incident, rescue teams are still working to save the trapped miners. Debris blocking the entry point has been cleared, the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported. However, reaching the affected part of the mine remains a challenge.
The workers are trapped at a depth of 4,000 feet, as stated by Deputy Director of Rescue Asghar Jamali. Debris from the collapse has fallen to depths ranging from 20 to 30 feet, making rescue efforts more difficult. Despite the obstacles, rescue personnel continue their operations with heavy machinery to remove debris.
Teams from PDMA and the mines rescue department arrived on-site shortly after the incident. The Balochistan government spokesperson, Shahid Rind, confirmed that the operation began immediately. However, gas and debris inside the mine have significantly slowed down progress.
Mineral Resources and Finance Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani has directed the Chief Inspector of Mines to send two additional rescue teams to assist. He also ordered a detailed investigation into the incident. Allegations of violations of standard mining procedures will be thoroughly examined, and strict action will be taken against those responsible for negligence, the minister added.
The government has pledged to uncover the cause of this tragic incident. Efforts to rescue the trapped miners continue around the clock, with teams working diligently to save lives.
