ISLAMABAD: The Attorney General of Pakistan presented the missing persons committee’s findings in the Islamabad High Court concerning the recovery of missing Baloch students case. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the implementation case regarding the recommendations of the commission tasked with recovering the missing students.
Imaan Zainab Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha appeared before the court as the counsels of the missing Baloch students in the case.
During the proceedings, Justice Kayani inquired about the number of terrorism cases involving Baloch students over the past decade, as well as the instances of arrests, disappearances, and harassment. The Attorney General stated that intelligence agencies had not harassed any citizens, indicating some progress in the matter. However, when questioned if secret agencies would be summoned to the police station, the AGP replied in the negative.
“No one questions their working under the law, we only want to prevent the acts against law,” court said.
“It will be good if we know the agencies working mechanism. The FIA and police could investigate under the law, the agencies assist them in investigation,” Justice Mohsin Akhtar said. “We have to work within the domain of the law,” he further said.
“No Pakistani journalist or parliamentarian supporting terrorists, no person hindering state entities from working under the law,” the bench observed.
The Attorney General acknowledged that a political resolution was necessary for the matter to be resolved effectively. Justice Kayani highlighted the significance of learning from past mistakes and moving forward.
Recognizing the AGP’s efforts in facilitating the return of several missing persons, the bench commended his work. Justice Kayani reiterated the court’s commitment to addressing missing persons cases, emphasizing that they would persist until resolved.
The Attorney General mentioned that the missing persons issue would be discussed in the upcoming cabinet sessions, proposing the formation of a committee comprising officers below the DIG level for better coordination.
The court adjourned the hearing until June 14, after issuing orders to the Attorney General and Imaan Mazari to review the proceedings.
