Multan Floods Displace Millions; CM Maryam Nawaz Steps Up with Aid Measures

The Multan floods have wreaked havoc in Jalalpur and Alipur tehsils, where the Chenab River swelled to 668,000 cusecs at Head Panjnad, sweeping away entire settlements and forcing millions from their homes.

Authorities confirmed that almost 80 percent of Alipur Tehsil now lies underwater. The Multan floods have not only destroyed homes but also wiped out crops spread across hundreds of acres. Local residents report that several villages have vanished, leaving families stranded and struggling to survive. Rescue teams say many victims remain trapped in submerged areas, waiting desperately for evacuation.

In Multan city, the situation has shown slight relief. At Head Muhammad Wala, the water level fell from 413.60 feet to 412.90 feet. Authorities reopened the main road for traffic but remain cautious, monitoring for fresh risks from the Multan floods.

In Jalalpur Pirwala, officials deliberately breached Gilani Dam to shield the city from wider destruction. The diverted waters are now moving towards Bahadurpur North, Bahadurpur South, Long, Sabira, and Kanhan, all of which face immediate danger of flooding. Residents in these areas have been told to evacuate without delay. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb visited Basti Baharan, overseeing reinforcement work on a dangerous crack and urging quick completion.

Tragedy struck during rescue efforts in Darabpur village, Alipur. A boat carrying victims of the Multan floods capsized when an extra passenger attempted to climb aboard. Rescue officials said the boat lost balance, but all passengers were saved without injury.

To reduce pressure on temporary dams, controlled breaches were made on Uch Sharif Road. According to CPO Sadiq Ali Dogar, the move was vital to protect Jalalpur city. Floodwaters have since been redirected towards Basti Long, Basti Kanha, and Bahadurpur.

The Flood Forecasting Division has issued warnings of very high flood levels at Head Panjnad, Sudhanai, and Ganda Singh Wala. High flood conditions continue at Head Sulaimanki, Head Islam, and Mailsi Siphon. Moderate flooding has been reported at Guddu Barrage, Sukkur Barrage, Trimo, and Baloki.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a special relief package for victims of the Multan floods. Families who lost loved ones will receive Rs1 million. Those who lost houses entirely will also get Rs1 million, while families with partially damaged homes will be given Rs500,000. For livestock losses, Rs500,000 will be given for each large animal and Rs50,000 for each small one.

A few days earlier, CM Maryam visited a relief camp in Multan. She assured the displaced people of full government support. She also inspected health, rescue, and service counters at the camp and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements, including cleanliness. Later, she visited the Bela relief camp where she met women and children, listened to their concerns, and promised action for restoring their homes.
