AJK Faces Intense Political Drama

Lawmakers have tabled a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq. The Pakistan Peoples Party has positioned Faisal Mumtaz Rathore as its nominee for the top post. Rathore needs 27 votes to secure the position of AJK Prime Minister. PPP leaders claim they already command the support of 45 members, which strengthens their confidence as the vote approaches.

The Assembly Secretariat received the no-confidence resolution on Friday afternoon. It includes signatures from 25 lawmakers. Twenty three of them belong to the PPP, while two are from the PML N. Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar is chairing today’s crucial session. PTI’s Leader of the Opposition Khawaja Farooq Ahmad is also attending the proceedings.

Haq and Rathore Exchange Greetings on the Floor

Prime Minister Anwarul Haq entered the House with four lawmakers soon after the session began. He walked toward Faisal Mumtaz Rathore and greeted him. The exchange fueled speculation that Haq has accepted the shifting power dynamics.

If the motion succeeds, Rathore will become the 16th Prime Minister of AJK. He will also be the fourth prime minister to take office under the current assembly. PPP lawmaker Qasim Majeed moved the motion. Media reports confirm that debate on the motion is currently under way in the AJK Legislative Assembly.

Anwarul Haq Addresses the Assembly

During his speech, Anwarul Haq said he would have stepped aside earlier if his colleagues had discussed their concerns with him. He stated that he told them he would resign if they gathered 27 members. He added that once the count reached 27, they only waited to see who the “groom” would be. He stressed that he holds no grievances against any member.

Earlier today, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore resigned as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development. He submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Haq before the session.

Who Is Faisal Mumtaz Rathore

Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was born on April 11, 1978, in Rawalpindi. He comes from one of the most influential political families in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He is the son of Mumtaz Hussain Rathore, a major political figure who served as Senior Minister in 1975, Prime Minister in 1990, Leader of the Opposition in 1991, and Speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly in 1996.

Rathore became the Secretary General of PPP AJK on March 23, 2017. He still holds this powerful position. He won re election in 2021 and played an active role in the opposition. In 2023, he was appointed Minister for Local Government and Rural Development in the coalition government led by Chaudhry Anwarul Haq.

He also headed the PPP negotiation committee during engagements with the Awami Action Committee. His political experience, party influence, and deep family legacy have placed him at the center of today’s historic no-confidence vote.
