ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) reiterated that its recent operation against illegal immigrants is not aimed at any specific nationality. This clarification comes in the wake of the caretaker government’s ultimatum, directing all undocumented immigrants, including Afghan nationals, to leave Pakistan by October 31, under the threat of imprisonment and deportation.
The decision to launch this operation was made during a high-level apex committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, which included the army chief. The committee discussed implementing stricter border controls, requiring passports and visas for cross-border movement, and limiting the acceptance of electronic Afghan identity cards (e-tazkiras) until October 31.
The Afghan Taliban’s spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, labeled the policy as “unacceptable” and urged reconsideration.
During the press briefing, FO Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch clarified that the operation’s objective is to repatriate individuals who have overstayed their visas or lack valid documents to stay in Pakistan. She emphasized that Pakistan is acting within the boundaries of its domestic laws and sovereignty.
Baloch underscored that this operation is distinct from the situation involving the 1.4 million Afghan refugees hosted by Pakistan for decades. Despite economic constraints, Pakistan has maintained generosity and hospitality towards these refugees.
The FO spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan’s national policy regarding Afghan refugees remains unchanged, and the country continues to engage with Afghanistan for a conducive and safe environment for their honorable repatriation.
Importantly, Pakistan’s ongoing operation against illegal immigrants aims to ensure compliance with domestic laws without discrimination based on nationality. The government is focused on addressing visa overstays and lack of proper documentation while upholding its commitment to hosting Afghan refugees with compassion and goodwill.
