ISLAMABAD: A local court in Islamabad on Wednesday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in connection with allegations of possessing weapons and alcohol.
The session court denied Gandapur’s request for exemption from court appearance on medical grounds and instructed the SHO of Bara Kahu police station to arrest and present him in court by tomorrow.
The case, which dates back to October 30, 2016, involves allegations that Gandapur took part in an illegal gathering and violated orders issued by the District Magistrate. The court is seeking clarification on Gandapur’s presence at the scene and his actions during the incident.
Gandapur, a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party led by the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is currently governing the volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
In a related development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi called on Chief Minister Gandapur to seek a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly, claiming he no longer holds a majority. In a press conference in Peshawar, Governor Kundi also criticized the provincial government for its failure to appoint Vice-Chancellors at universities, noting that the court had challenged the government’s authority on this matter.
