Pakistan is observing the sixth anniversary of Operation Swift Retort, a historic air combat event that demonstrated the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) capabilities. On February 27, 2019, PAF successfully shot down an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet over Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The event was a direct response to India’s violation of Pakistan’s airspace a day earlier.
On February 26, 2019, Indian fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (LoC) from the Muzaffarabad sector. They released a payload in an open area before hastily retreating. The intrusion, known as the Balakot Strikes, was met with an immediate and decisive response. The next day, PAF jets entered Indian airspace, locked onto military targets, and issued warning shots before returning.
As Indian aircraft chased the retreating PAF jets, Pakistan launched a surprise counterattack. In the ensuing aerial dogfight, PAF downed two Indian fighter jets. One of the pilots, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, ejected and landed inside Pakistan’s territory. He was flying a MiG-21 aircraft when he was captured. Pakistan later released him as a goodwill gesture.
The PAF pilots responsible for this victory were honored with military awards. Wing Commander Noman Ali Khan received the Sitara-e-Jur’at (Star of Valor). Group Captain Faheem Ahmad Khan and Squadron Leader Hassan Mahmood Siddiqui were awarded the Tamgha-e-Jur’at (Medal of Valor).
Operation Swift Retort reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty. It showcased the PAF’s operational readiness and highlighted its ability to counter aggression. The mission also restored deterrence and reinforced Pakistan’s strategic dominance in the region.
In tribute to the armed forces, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and service chiefs praised their professionalism and dedication. They assured that Pakistan’s military remains prepared to counter any threats.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) also issued a statement, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to national security. “With unwavering resolve, Pakistan’s armed forces stand ready to defend the motherland while contributing to regional and global peace,” the statement read.
The military leadership reaffirmed that Pakistan’s forces remain vigilant. Their dedication ensures the nation’s safety while fostering peace and stability in the region. Operation Swift Retort remains a defining moment in Pakistan’s defense history, symbolizing strength, readiness, and resilience.
