Sources have revealed that the security arrangements in prisons across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are still reliant on outdated, traditional systems, making them vulnerable to serious security threats. The need for upgrading these systems to meet modern standards has become urgent to prevent prisoner escapes, unauthorized activities, and other illegal actions.
According to official documents, KP’s law-and-order situation remains highly precarious. Despite this, the province’s prisons lack the advanced security infrastructure required to address contemporary challenges. This vulnerability highlights an alarming gap in the existing security framework.
To address these issues, the provincial government has decided to overhaul the security infrastructure in its prisons. The proposed measures include Installation of CCTV Cameras: Comprehensive surveillance systems to monitor activities inside and around the prisons.
Deployment of Mobile Signal Jammers: To block unauthorized communication from within prison walls. Advanced Communication Systems: To facilitate efficient coordination between prison staff and security agencies.
The financial requirements for these upgrades are detailed as follows Mobile signal jammers 1.30 billion PKR,CCTV cameras 1.37 billion PKR, Communication systems 85 million PKR, In the initial phase, modernization efforts will focus on five key prisons deemed critical for security upgrades.
These include facilities in Mardan, Haripur, Dera Ismail Khan (D.I. Khan) and Bannu. The total cost for equipping these five prisons with modern technology is estimated at 1.329 billion PKR.
The outdated security systems currently in place leave KP’s prisons susceptible to serious risks, including escapes and unauthorized activities. Introducing modern technology will not only enhance monitoring capabilities but also ensure a safer and more controlled environment.
The provincial government views this initiative as a crucial step toward strengthening the overall security infrastructure and improving governance in the justice system. Once implemented, these upgrades will set a new standard for prison security in the region, significantly mitigating risks and boosting public safety.
