The United States has called on India and Pakistan to seek a “responsible solution” after the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Washington confirmed it is watching the situation very closely. Both New Delhi and Islamabad have been contacted through different diplomatic channels, according to the U.S. State Department.
In an email to Reuters, a spokesperson stated, “This is an evolving situation, and we are monitoring developments closely. We have been in touch with the governments of India and Pakistan at multiple levels.” The spokesperson added that the United States strongly encourages all sides to work toward a peaceful and responsible resolution after the Pahalgam attack.
Following the tragic incident, India blamed Pakistan without providing evidence. In response, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and took several countermeasures against its neighbor. These steps have intensified tensions already fueled by the Pahalgam attack.
Pakistan reacted strongly. It suspended all trade with India and shut its airspace to Indian airlines. Islamabad also declared Indian diplomats stationed there as undesirable persons. Meanwhile, Pakistan adopted a diplomatic approach by offering full support for an impartial international investigation into the Pahalgam attack. Pakistani officials have also reached out to foreign ministers worldwide to update them on the unfolding situation.
China has stepped forward to support Pakistan during this tense period. The Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement expressing full understanding of Pakistan’s security concerns following the Pahalgam attack. China voiced strong support for Islamabad’s efforts to defend its sovereignty and national security interests.
In the statement, Beijing reaffirmed its backing for a fair, timely, and transparent probe into the Pahalgam attack, where 26 tourists lost their lives at the hands of gunmen. Stressing the need for impartiality, China urged both India and Pakistan to remain patient. It emphasized that dialogue is the only path to solving the issues between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
The diplomatic activity around the Pahalgam attack continues to grow, with major powers calling for restraint and responsibility to avoid a larger crisis.
