RAWALPINDI: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, reaffirmed the Pakistan Army’s commitment to national interest over any political leader’s pursuit of power.
“All political parties and leaders are respected by us. However, no one’s politics or ambitions can surpass Pakistan’s interest,” he stated during a media briefing at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi.
Responding to questions about alleged backdoor talks between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment, the ISPR DG clarified the Pakistan Army’s stance. He emphasized that the Army maintains professional and governmental relations with all ruling governments, devoid of political inclinations.
“Pakistan Army is a national force. It does not represent any specific ideology or party,” he explained.
Welcoming Political Dialogue
The ISPR DG lauded the idea of politicians resolving issues through dialogue rather than violence. “It is encouraging to see political leaders sit together to address disputes through conversation,” he noted.
He highlighted that political parties have the prerogative to engage in discussions. He welcomed peaceful dialogue as a substitute for anarchy and unrest.
Pakistan Army’s Fight Against Terrorism
Lieutenant General Chaudhry provided details of the Army’s ongoing operations against terrorism. He revealed that over 59,779 intelligence-based operations were conducted last year, resulting in the elimination of 925 terrorists and the arrest of numerous others.
He described the year as a landmark in counter-terrorism efforts, with the highest number of terrorists eliminated in five years. Among them, 73 most-wanted terrorists were neutralized.
“Pakistan Army and law enforcement agencies carry out 169 operations daily to combat terrorism,” he disclosed.
Weapons and equipment recovered from terrorist hideouts further demonstrated the magnitude of the threat. The spokesperson also acknowledged the sacrifices of the armed forces.
“Over 383 officers and soldiers embraced martyrdom in the ongoing fight against terrorism,” he said.
Addressing Regional and Border Security Challenges
The ISPR DG discussed the regional security issues, particularly cross-border threats from Afghanistan. He stressed the Pakistan Army’s resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and address threats originating from Afghan soil.
“Networks operating from Afghanistan continue to target Pakistan. We are resolute in eliminating them,” he asserted.
The Army has also made significant progress in curbing smuggling and improving border security. These measures have contributed to both national security and economic stability.
May 9 Incident and Military Courts
Lieutenant General Chaudhry elaborated on the May 9, 2023, violent protests, which he termed a matter of national concern. He emphasized that military courts operate within Pakistan’s constitution and legal framework.
“Military courts have been validated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). They ensure thorough legal processes, including the right to appeals,” he explained.
He warned that similar incidents in the future would face strict consequences. He criticized those spreading propaganda against the Army while previously supporting military courts.
Persistent Threats Along Eastern Borders
Regarding India, the ISPR DG reaffirmed the Pakistan Army’s readiness to counter any aggression. He condemned Indian ceasefire violations and the suppression of minorities, including Sikhs and Kashmiris.
“India’s oppressive measures in occupied Kashmir and its targeting of minorities expose its agenda,” he remarked.
Despite these challenges, the Army remains steadfast in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and supporting oppressed communities.
Public Welfare Initiatives
Lieutenant General Chaudhry highlighted the Pakistan Army’s contributions to social development. Projects include educational programs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and dam construction in Balochistan.
“The Army is actively involved in initiatives aimed at improving lives across the nation,” he said.
He also addressed the challenge of misinformation, noting that fake news threatens national stability.
