ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, the champions of the 2009 edition, are poised to kick off their ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024 journey against the United States ( US) on Thursday, June 6, at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who recently revived their opening partnership with a strong 59-run stand in the fourth T20I against England, are anticipated to lead the charge at the top of the order for this encounter.
Usman Khan, who made the most of his opportunity in the last T20I against England with a rapid 38 off 21 balls, is slated to bat at number three. Similarly, Fakhar Zaman is expected to maintain his regular position at number four.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan has been struggling with confidence following a series of disappointing performances with both bat and gloves. This might prompt Pakistan to consider bringing in Saim Ayub as a replacement.
If Ayub gets the nod, he could potentially open alongside Rizwan, with Babar Azam, Usman Khan, and Fakhar Zaman sliding down to the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively.
Power-hitter Iftikhar Ahmed is anticipated to play a crucial role in the lower order, aiming to provide impetus during the final overs. With all-rounder Imad Wasim sidelined due to injury, Shadab Khan will be the sole specialist spinner in the XI, supported by the part-time spin of Iftikhar Ahmed.
Babar Azam mentioned on Tuesday that Pakistan may opt for a pace-heavy attack. Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, and Haris Rauf are locks in the lineup, while Abbas Afridi could be favored over the recently expensive Naseem Shah.
