Officials said the militants had been operating from positions inside Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces before attempting to cross into Pakistani territory through the Kurram sector. The operation, they added, took place under the watch of Afghan Taliban forces stationed nearby.
Afghan Taliban Opens Fire After Kurram Sector Infiltration Attempt Fails
Once the infiltration bid collapsed, security sources reported that Afghan Taliban personnel launched unprovoked gunfire targeting Pakistani border checkpoints in the same sector. Pakistani troops stationed along the frontier responded swiftly to the escalation.
In the exchange that followed, Pakistani forces struck several Afghan Taliban border posts along with associated mortar positions, sources said. The counter-offensive reportedly forced Afghan Taliban units to abandon a number of their forward posts in the area.
According to the same sources, this marked the second phase of the confrontation. The initial breach attempt near the Kurram sector was neutralized through timely action by Pakistani troops, who remained alert to movement originating from the Afghan side of the border.
Security officials noted that the retaliatory strikes on Afghan Taliban mortar emplacements and outposts were carried out in direct response to the unprovoked firing, rather than as an initiating action. Multiple positions held by Afghan Taliban fighters were reported vacated following the exchange.
Pakistani troops deployed along the border have maintained a firm response throughout the episode, addressing both the attempted infiltration and the subsequent firing, sources confirmed. Security agencies are continuing to monitor the situation closely, given the sensitivity of activity along the Kurram sector and adjoining border areas.
