Pakistan Calls for Joint D-8 Media Strategy to Counter Global Misinformation

Atta tarra in a recent discussion regarding D-8 media forum

Pakistan Calls for Joint D-8 Media Strategy to Counter Global Misinformation, a key message delivered by Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar, underscores Islamabad’s focus on credible communication in a rapidly changing digital world. Pakistan Calls for Joint D-8 Media Strategy to Counter Global Misinformation also highlights the government’s push for stronger cooperation within the D-8 bloc to counter propaganda, misinformation and hostile narratives.

Tarar congratulated Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the latest D-8 media event and praised President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership for giving the platform new momentum. He said the global information landscape was transforming at high speed, with digital media becoming the most powerful channel for communication and influence. He acknowledged the opportunities created by emerging technologies but warned that propaganda, fake news and misinformation were shaping harmful global narratives.

Preparing Youth for Responsible Digital Engagement

Tarar said Pakistan must empower its youth to use digital platforms responsibly. He highlighted that Pakistan had 117 million internet users and over 80 million active social media users. Nearly 68 percent of the national population consisted of young people under 30, which created a strong digital advantage for the country. He said Pakistan needed to bridge the gap between older “digital immigrants” and the new digital-first generation.

Referring to recent tensions with India, Tarar said Pakistani youth played a decisive role on the information front during the crisis. He said timely and accurate information shaped national confidence and protected Pakistan’s narrative at a critical moment. He added that the government continued to prioritise transparent, proactive and responsible communication.

Strengthening Cooperation Among D-8 Member States

He called for deeper coordination among D-8 countries and said member states must share positive stories from within the bloc and promote constructive messaging worldwide. He welcomed the establishment of the Media Excellence Centre in Azerbaijan and said new partnerships across the D-8 region would unlock major opportunities for media innovation, digital collaboration and strategic communication.

Tarar concluded by saying that the D-8 nations must adopt a unified media strategy to counter global information challenges and promote credible, collaborative and influential communication.
