Pakistan is proudly celebrating the 27th anniversary of its historic nuclear tests today. The nation marks May 28 as Youm-e-Takbeer, a day that reflects national strength and determination. To honor the day, a public holiday has been declared across the country. Ceremonies, rallies, and seminars are being held at both federal and provincial levels.
The rugged Chagai Hills still stand witness to the bold decision made 27 years ago. On this day in 1998, Pakistan became the world’s seventh and the Muslim world’s first nuclear power. It was a defining moment in the nation’s history.
Under the leadership of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan conducted five successful nuclear tests in Chagai, Balochistan. These tests came in response to India’s earlier nuclear explosions. With this move, Pakistan not only secured its defense but also restored strategic balance in South Asia.
President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated the nation on Youm-e-Takbeer. He described the day as a symbol of Pakistan’s sovereignty, safety, and regional integrity. He praised the scientists, engineers, and military and civilian leaders for their roles. Zardari also honored the vision of the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, who laid the foundation for the nuclear program.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended congratulations to the nation. He said that Pakistan is celebrating this year’s Youm-e-Takbeer at a historic moment. Referring to recent events from May 6 to 10, he said Pakistan emerged victorious in defending its sovereignty. He recalled how Nawaz Sharif courageously defied international pressure in 1998 and ordered six nuclear tests. That decision, he added, made Pakistan’s defense unbreakable.
The armed forces and service chiefs also issued a joint message. They congratulated the nation and said they remain fully prepared to defend the motherland. They emphasized that Youm-e-Takbeer reminds the world of the day Pakistan became a nuclear power. They also called the nuclear capability a national trust.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said May 28 is a golden chapter in Pakistan’s defense history. He stated that the Chagai mountains still echo the courage shown by the nation in the face of global pressure, economic sanctions, and serious threats. According to him, Youm-e-Takbeer is not just a day but a symbol of courage, unity, and sacrifice that inspires the nation to face any challenge.
Naqvi also addressed India’s recent unprovoked actions and the events of May 10. He said these incidents prove that Pakistan can give a strong and immediate response to any aggression. He added that the decision to acquire nuclear power was not just technological—it was a wise move to maintain peace through strategic balance.
Patriotic celebrations continue across the country. Special events are introducing the younger generation to this proud moment in Pakistan’s history. A major event is also taking place at Chagai, where under the national flag, a renewed pledge is being made for sovereignty, peace, and security.
