Pakistan condemns attack on UN peacekeepers in Sudan after a deadly drone strike in the Kadugli area of southern Kordofan shocked the international community. The attack killed six Bangladeshi personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei and injured several others. He stressed that these peacekeepers served under the UN flag and worked to prevent conflict and protect civilians in a volatile region.
Andrabi highlighted the role of UN peacekeepers as frontline defenders of stability. He paid tribute to the Bangladeshi troops who lost their lives while carrying out their duties. He called their sacrifice a symbol of commitment to peace. Pakistan urged a swift and transparent investigation to identify those behind the attack. The statement demanded accountability and justice for the fallen Blue Helmets.
Pakistan also reaffirmed its commitment to UN peacekeeping missions. The spokesperson said Pakistan would continue close coordination with the UN Security Council and international partners. He emphasized the need to ensure safety and security for all peacekeepers operating in conflict zones.
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres also condemned the incident. He described the attack as horrific and warned that it may qualify as war crimes under international law. He stated that attacks on peacekeepers hold no justification and require accountability.
Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sadness over the tragedy. He confirmed six deaths and eight injuries. He requested emergency support from the UN for Bangladeshi personnel on the ground. Yunus assured families that the government would stand with them during this painful time. Bangladesh’s foreign ministry also issued a strong condemnation.
UN peacekeepers operate in Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan. The area often faces instability, making peacekeeping missions critical and dangerous.
