Pakistan has strongly condemned an attack by the Houthi militia on the Taibah power distribution station in Madina, describing it as a “grave provocation.” The Foreign Office made the announcement in a statement issued on Friday.
“This reprehensible attack against civilian infrastructure supplying electricity to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque is a grave provocation and a matter of deep concern and anguish for millions of Muslims worldwide,” the statement said.
What the Saudi-Led Coalition Said
The Foreign Office statement followed an announcement on Thursday by the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis. The coalition said the group had struck a power distribution station in Madina that supplies electricity to the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque.
According to the coalition, the strike knocked one transformer out of service but did not disrupt the wider power network.
Islamabad Backs Saudi Arabia
In its statement, Islamabad urged an immediate and unconditional end to “such reckless actions,” which it said also pose a grave threat to regional peace and security. Pakistan also renewed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and voiced full support for the kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.
“We stand firmly with Saudi Arabia in its efforts to safeguard the Two Holy Mosques, protect its people and ensure the safety of pilgrims,” the statement said. It added, “Pakistan has been and will continue to make all efforts for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.”
Earlier Incidents and Fresh Missile Attacks
Last month, Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Makkah before it could enter restricted airspace over the city. The coalition called it the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah since 2017.
The coalition described the Madina strike as part of repeated Houthi efforts to target the Two Holy Mosques and “provoke” Muslims around the world. It said it would keep taking steps to protect the holy sites and pilgrims.
The coalition also reported that it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis toward the southern Saudi city of Khamis Mushait. It did not immediately give details on damage or casualties.
Local officials said early on Friday that the Houthis had also targeted the headquarters of the Saudi-led coalition forces command in Aden with several ballistic missiles and drones.
