ISLAMABAD: Pakistan responded on Wednesday to US House Resolution 901 concerning the nation’s political situation, dismissing it as lacking constructive and objective understanding of Pakistan’s electoral processes.
Speaking at a press conference, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated that the resolution on Pakistan’s 2024 general elections reflects an incomplete understanding of the country’s political dynamics and electoral procedures.
Baloch emphasized that Pakistan views the timing and context of the resolution as discordant with the positive trajectory of Pakistan-US bilateral relations. She highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law, underscoring these as integral to national interests.
The spokesperson affirmed Pakistan’s stance on constructive dialogue and engagement rooted in mutual respect and comprehension, labeling such resolutions as counterproductive and lacking in objectivity.
She expressed hope that the US Congress would contribute positively to strengthening Pakistan-US relations by focusing on collaborative opportunities beneficial to both nations and their peoples.
Earlier, the US House of Representatives, through a resolution, expressed its support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan and urged an impartial investigation into alleged irregularities during the February 8 general elections.
The resolution, passed with 368 votes in favor and 7 against, called for a full and independent investigation into claims of interference or irregularities in Pakistan’s February 2024 election.
The resolution also denounced attempts to suppress Pakistani citizens’ participation in democracy through harassment, intimidation, violence, arbitrary detention, and restrictions on access to the Internet and telecommunications.
