Pakistani security forces successfully stopped a cross-border attack by militants in Kurram and North Waziristan on Saturday. The operation, carried out by vigilant soldiers, ended in heavy losses for the attackers, sources said.
A group of 20 to 25 militants, reportedly in coordination with the Afghan Taliban, launched the assault early in the morning. They used heavy weapons to target Pakistani posts. However, the swift response of the forces thwarted their plans.
Heavy Losses for the Attackers
Pakistani troops not only neutralized the attempted infiltration but also launched a strong counteroffensive. Over 15 militants, including Afghan Taliban members, were killed during the operation. Many others suffered injuries, according to reports.
The retaliation also forced the Afghan Taliban to abandon six border posts. The attackers incurred severe damages on their side, with reports hinting at further casualties. Despite the intense exchange of fire, Pakistani forces sustained no fatalities. Only three soldiers were injured.
Rising Terror Threats and Government’s Stance
The incident highlights the rising terrorist activity in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan. These provinces share borders with Afghanistan and have been frequent targets of militant groups.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently addressed the situation. “We want good relations with Kabul,” he said during a cabinet meeting on Friday. “However, the TTP must be stopped from killing our innocent people. This is our red line.”
Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghanistan’s interim government to prevent its territory from being used by militant groups. The recent attack adds to the urgency of diplomatic and security measures.
Kinetic Action Against Militants Intensifies
Security forces have ramped up operations against militants in KP and Balochistan. Earlier this week, Pakistani troops eliminated 13 terrorists in three separate operations. Just a day prior, another 13 militants were killed in an intelligence-based operation in South Waziristan.
The third quarter of 2024 witnessed a sharp rise in violence, according to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS). Fatalities increased by 90% during July to September.
A total of 722 people lost their lives in terrorist incidents, including civilians, security personnel, and militants. Another 615 people were injured in 328 recorded incidents. Over 97% of these deaths occurred in KP and Balochistan, marking the highest percentage in a decade.
Military’s Vigilance Against Threats
So far in 2024, the military has reported 383 soldiers killed in clashes. On the other side, 925 militants have been eliminated. Security forces continue their vigilance to counter these threats and protect Pakistan’s borders.
