NEW YORK: Pakistan is poised to secure an unprecedented eighth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, with contenders including Denmark, Greece, Somalia, and Panama vying for seats.
Each candidate, including Pakistan with its seven prior terms, brings extensive experience to the table, with Panama having served five times, Denmark four times, Greece twice, and Somalia once.
The available seats for this election are distributed across various regional groups, including the African group, one for the Asia-Pacific group, one for the Latin American and Caribbean group, and two seats for the Western European group.
As the world grapples with heightened global tensions, exacerbated by conflicts such as the ongoing situation in Palestine and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the incoming Security Council members will face significant challenges. These challenges have led to divisions within the Security Council, with major powers often taking conflicting stances on critical issues ranging from humanitarian crises to disarmament and security.
The election for these five non-permanent UNSC seats is scheduled to take place this Thursday.
