Pakistan Iran relations took a significant step forward on Wednesday after Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran. The meeting covered bilateral ties as well as the broader security situation unfolding across the region.
Sources familiar with the discussion said Naqvi delivered a special message on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, addressing the current regional circumstances directly with the Iranian president.
Defence Pact With Saudi Arabia and Turkiye Discussed
Citing Iranian media, reports indicated that Naqvi also updated President Pezeshkian on the newly signed joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, which was finalised in Makkah. The interior minister reportedly walked the Iranian leadership through the details of the pact, keeping Tehran informed of Islamabad’s evolving regional partnerships.
Separately, Iranian media sources noted that Field Marshal Asim Munir has remained in close and ongoing contact with senior figures from Gulf nations, Iran, and the United States. He is said to be spearheading regional peace efforts, with Naqvi playing a supporting role in these diplomatic outreach efforts.
Iran Signals Readiness for Deeper Cooperation
Speaking after his sit-down with Naqvi, President Pezeshkian said Tehran was prepared to open new avenues for joint cooperation with Islamabad. He emphasised that closer bilateral ties would serve the mutual interests of both nations while contributing to wider regional stability and security.
The Iranian president further stated that stronger cooperation between the two neighbours could play a meaningful role in reinforcing peace across the broader region.
Pezeshkian also acknowledged the goodwill demonstrated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other Pakistani leaders in pursuing expanded relations with Iran, calling it a gesture that Tehran values highly. He reiterated Iran’s willingness to broaden cooperation with Pakistan across multiple sectors, describing the moment as an opportunity for both countries to move forward together.
He added that deepening these bilateral ties, beyond serving each nation’s individual interests, would also help stabilise the wider region at a time when regional security cooperation remains a pressing concern.
Naqvi Reaffirms Pakistan’s Commitment to Iran
For his part, Interior Minister Naqvi described the Pakistan Iran relationship as strong and unshakeable. He said Islamabad remained firmly committed to broadening its engagement with Tehran across all areas of cooperation.
Ahead of his meeting with President Pezeshkian, Naqvi also held separate talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, where the two discussed the current state of affairs in the region.
