ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have once again pledged to strengthen Pakistan Iran security cooperation and eliminate terrorism along their shared border.
The renewed commitment came during a telephone call between Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Iran’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi. The Iranian embassy confirmed the exchange in an official statement.
According to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, General Mousavi said Tehran was ready to work closely with Islamabad to wipe out terrorism and ensure stability along the frontier. He also extended solidarity with the people of Pakistan affected by devastating floods. “Iran will proudly provide any assistance to our dear brothers in Pakistan,” he remarked.
The Iranian commander further praised Islamabad for extending support to Tehran during its recent 12-day confrontation with Israel. He stressed that both nations had already been collaborating on multiple levels and would continue to expand these ties.
High-level visits and agreements
Earlier this month, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian paid a two-day official visit to Pakistan aimed at boosting bilateral relations. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included senior ministers and government officials.
During his stay, President Pezeshkian met Pakistan’s top leadership and also addressed the Pakistan-Iran Business Forum in Islamabad. Both countries signed 12 agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in several areas.
The accords included agreements on plant protection and quarantine, joint use of the Mirjaveh–Taftan border crossing, scientific and technological collaboration, ICT, cultural and media exchanges, meteorology, maritime safety, judicial cooperation, air services, product certification, and a tourism partnership plan covering 2025–27.
Focus on regional peace and counter-terrorism
In a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and President Pezeshkian, both leaders underlined that peace and prosperity in border regions depended on effective counter-terrorism measures.
At a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Iranian leader said both sides agreed to enhance border security for the safety of citizens on both sides. The prime minister added that terrorism could not be tolerated under any circumstances. He noted that if someone in Iran suffered from a terrorist act, it was equal to a victim of terror in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Sharif also emphasized that the two brotherly countries would adopt effective measures to eliminate terrorism and strengthen Pakistan Iran security cooperation.
