FLORIDA: In a disappointing turn of events, Pakistan has been officially knocked out of the T20 World Cup after the USA vs Ireland match was called off due to continuous rain in Florida on Friday.
With the playing conditions rendered unplayable by a wet outfield and persistent rain, both teams were awarded one point each. This propelled the co-hosts to 5 points, securing the second spot on the points table and making history by progressing to the Super Eight stage in their debut appearance in the T20 World Cup. The USA now joins India in the Super 8s.
Even if Pakistan manages to win their upcoming match against Ireland on Sunday, they can only accumulate a maximum of 4 points, which is insufficient for qualification.
For Pakistan to have a chance at advancing, the USA-Ireland match needed to take place with the USA suffering a defeat. This scenario would have given Pakistan the opportunity to defeat Ireland and progress to the next round. However, adverse weather conditions dashed their hopes, resulting in Babar Azam’s team’s elimination from the tournament.
Earlier, prospects of a match were slim as Florida, home to Lauderhill, experienced a tropical thunderstorm leading to incessant rain and flash flooding.
Furthermore, the scheduled game between Sri Lanka and Nepal at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground was abandoned earlier in the week without a ball being bowled, contributing to Sri Lanka’s exit from Super Eight contention.
