ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported its fourth poliovirus case of the year on Saturday. The Ministry of National Health confirmed that a 2-year-old boy from Bharkan union council in Sindh’s Shikarpur district is the latest victim.
Health department officials stated that the virus was detected in stool samples collected from the child, who developed symptoms of paralysis on May 21.
This marks the fourth polio case in Pakistan in 2024. The previous three cases were reported in Balochistan.
Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries in the world where poliovirus, which causes paralysis and can be life-threatening, is still endemic.
Last year, Pakistan reported six polio cases: four from the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and two from the southern port city of Karachi.
