Pakistan Saudi Turkey defence agreement talks move ahead as leaders gather in the kingdom this week. Media reports indicate the three countries plan to formalize a joint defence pact during their trilateral summit on Friday. The move comes amid heightened regional tensions linked to the US-Israel conflict involving Iran that began on February 28.
Pakistan has played a mediating role aimed at de-escalating the situation, which has affected several Gulf states and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Officials view closer security coordination as a step toward greater stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, who also serves as Chief of Defence Forces, landed in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for a stay that runs through Saturday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to arrive on Friday, according to the Turkish presidency.
Upon arrival in Jeddah, the Pakistani delegation was welcomed by Makkah’s Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz and Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley. During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir performed Umrah.
Trilateral Summit and Pakistan Saudi Turkey Defence Agreement Plans
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi confirmed at the weekly briefing that the prime minister’s official visit runs from August 6 to 8. Discussions will cover bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia and broader regional developments. “PM Shehbaz will meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the visit,” the Foreign Office stated.
The talks will focus on strengthening relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia while exchanging views on issues of shared interest. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, already in the kingdom after a stop in Jordan, forms part of the delegation.
Officials describe the visit as important for advancing regional peace, diplomatic coordination and a common approach to stability. Pakistan continues its efforts to ease Middle East tensions and encourage peaceful solutions to disputes.
A later Foreign Office statement provided further details on the prime minister’s program in Saudi Arabia. The anticipated Pakistan Saudi Turkey defence agreement is expected to feature prominently in the Friday discussions as the three nations seek stronger collective security arrangements.
