ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been elected to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. The election took place by consensus during the 68th Session of the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, representing the Middle East and South Asia region. This marks Pakistan’s 21st term on the IAEA’s BOG.
Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), stated, “It is a great pleasure for me to address a community eager to adopt nuclear science and technology for the socio-economic development of their countries.”
He emphasized Pakistan’s long-standing and mutually beneficial partnership with the IAEA, noting that cancer significantly contributes to non-communicable diseases, resulting in approximately 180,000 deaths annually in Pakistan. Dr. Anwar highlighted PAEC’s commitment to prioritizing nuclear technology applications in the health sector.
Pakistan reaffirmed its dedication to sharing its experience and expertise in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology with IAEA Member States through the Agency’s Technical Cooperation Programme and various collaborative initiatives.
Earlier this month, Pakistan was also elected President of the Tenth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).
