Pakistan Senate Demands Postponement of General Elections

Senate Demands Postponement of General Elections

ISLAMABAD: The Senate, the upper house of the Parliament, on Friday demanded postponement of the  upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.

Senator Dilawar Khan introduced the resolution, asserting that the current law and order situation in the country did not favor holding elections.

The resolution cited recent terrorist attacks, including those targeting leaders of the JUIF, as a reason for the proposed delay. Additionally, it expressed concern about the increasing number of coronavirus cases. However, shortly before the resolution was presented, the health minister informed the house that no cases of the Covid-19 JN.1 strain had been detected in the country.

Senator Afnanullah Khan from the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz opposed the resolution, stating that his party did not support a delay in elections.
