ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet approved the Digital Nation Pakistan Act 2024 in principle on Tuesday, aiming to establish the National Digital Commission and Pakistan Digital Authority, promoting the digitization of the national economy and paperless governance.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, directed the Law Ministry to review the Act, which seeks to modernize the services sector to meet international standards.
The National Digital Commission, serving as a policymaking body, will be led by the prime minister and include federal and provincial representatives. Additionally, the Pakistan Digital Authority will be created to realize the goals of Digital Pakistan, functioning as a corporate entity with financial and administrative autonomy.
The cabinet also approved the appointment of members to the National School for Public Policy from both public and private education sectors. On the human rights ministry’s recommendation, a cabinet committee was formed to appoint a member from Islamabad to the National Commission for Human Rights.
The meeting gave preliminary approval to The Arbitration Bill 2024 and called for consultations with the provinces under Article 144 of the constitution. It also endorsed the signing of an MoU between the National Accountability Bureau and Sri Lanka’s Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption, fostering cooperation against bribery and the illegal flow of money.
Additionally, the federal cabinet ratified the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises from May 13 and 20, 2024, the Economic Coordination Committee’s decisions from May 23 and 27, 2024, and those of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases from June 5.
