NEW YORK CITY: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ Al Sudani today on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During their discussion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the strong ties between Pakistan and Iraq, highlighting their deep historical, cultural, and religious connections. He also expressed gratitude for the excellent arrangements made by the Iraqi government for Pakistani Zaireen.
The leaders agreed to further deepen their bilateral relations, recognizing the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation. They addressed regional and international issues of common concern, particularly the ongoing violence in Gaza and its humanitarian impact. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s call for an immediate ceasefire and accountability regarding the violence in Gaza.
Both leaders emphasized their alignment on international matters and committed to enhancing collaborative efforts at both the UN and OIC platforms to achieve an immediate ceasefire and ensure unhindered humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people.
In addition to his meeting with Prime Minister Al Sudani, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has engaged with several other leaders during the UN General Assembly, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus, Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
