More Pakistani students in Bangladesh are expected to be repatriated soon. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Syed Maroof, announced this on Sunday as violence in the country escalated.
Maroof said that one-third of the 144 Pakistani students in Bangladesh have already returned home. He urged the remaining students to stay vigilant. They have been advised to reach the High Commission as the situation worsens.
On Sunday alone, 91 people were killed, including 14 police officers. This brings the total death toll since July to at least 261. The unrest, initially about civil service job quotas, has now turned into wider protests. Demonstrators are calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down after 15 years in power.
The High Commissioner advised Pakistani students to stay in their rooms and avoid the ongoing violence. Some students have already reached the High Commission. The mission is in constant contact with them and is taking all necessary steps to ensure their safety.
