Pakistan’s batting lineup struggled to withstand the West Indies’ attack on Day 2 of the first Test at Multan Cricket Stadium. On Saturday, the visitors dismissed Pakistan’s remaining six batters, limiting the hosts to 230 all out within the first session.
Saud Shakeel (84) and Mohammad Rizwan (71) were the only players to make significant contributions. Their crucial partnership gave Pakistan a modest total despite challenges posed by the foggy weather and tricky pitch conditions.
The second day started with a half-hour delay due to dense fog, which had also disrupted play on Day 1. Pakistan had resumed their innings at 143-4, with Shakeel and Rizwan batting on unbeaten half-centuries.
Captain Shan Masood’s decision to bat first on the fog-hit Multan pitch seemed to misfire. Early wickets tumbled as Pakistan slumped to 46-4 on the first day. Jayden Seales’ sharp bowling saw Babar Azam caught behind after scoring just eight.
Shakeel and Rizwan fought back, building a strong partnership. However, both were eventually dismissed by Kevin Sinclair. Sajid Khan managed to score 18 but was bowled by Jomel Warrican in the 69th over.
West Indies’ bowlers utilized the conditions well. Gudakesh Motie opened with left-arm spin on a pitch that offered considerable turn. However, it was Seales who inflicted the most damage.
Opener Muhammad Hurraira edged one to debutant wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach after making six runs. Kamran Ghulam fell lbw for five, misjudging an incoming delivery from Seales. Babar Azam, after consulting Shakeel, decided to review his dismissal. Replays confirmed an edge, and Pakistan lost their review.
The early breakthroughs and disciplined bowling helped West Indies dominate Pakistan’s batting lineup, setting the tone for a gripping Test match.
