ISLAMABAD: The Senate of Pakistan has reconstituted the parliamentary committee responsible for judges’ appointments following consultations with opposition leaders from both the Senate and the National Assembly.
As per a notification from the Senate Secretariat, the committee members include Farooq H Naek, Anushay Rehman, and Mohsin Aziz, alongside Hamid Khan, Khawaja Asif, and Shazia Marri.
Moreover, members from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Sardar Latif Khosa, have been appointed.
The primary task of the parliamentary committee is to review recommendations from the Supreme Judicial Council regarding appointments to higher judicial positions.
Earlier, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed openness to discussing the extension of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure. Tarar acknowledged circulating proposals regarding this matter and emphasized a willingness to consider them, noting that the committee’s role in such appointments has been likened to a “rubber stamp” since the 19th constitutional amendment.
Tarar highlighted the need for balance in judicial appointments, recalling the government’s efforts in maintaining this equilibrium during the 18th constitutional amendment.
