Pine Nut Forests Under Threat in South Waziristan

Centuries-old pine nut forests in Angoor Adda, part of Tehsil Birmal in Lower South Waziristan, are being cut down without restraint. Residents say the illegal felling has put these valuable woodlands at serious risk.

According to a Khyber News report, the trees are far more than scenery for people living in the area. Chilgoza, the edible pine nut harvested from these forests, is one of the main sources of work and income for local families.

Why the Pine Nut Forests Matter to Locals

Beyond their economic value, the forests help keep the air in the region clean. They also play a role in maintaining a stable climate across the area.

Residents fear the consequences if the cutting is not stopped. In their view, the woodlands could disappear entirely, leaving many people jobless. They also warn that the local weather could suffer badly once the tree cover is gone.

Residents Criticize Provincial Government

Frustration in the community is directed at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government, which locals criticized sharply over the situation.

They have urged the forest department to act without delay and halt the illegal felling. They also want strict legal action taken against those involved in the destruction of the pine nut forests.
