ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that terrorism in Pakistan is a key challenge preventing the country from benefiting from its vast natural resources. He pointed out that foreign forces backing terrorists do not want Pakistan to utilize its mineral wealth.
Speaking at the “Rab-e-Zuljalal ka Ehsaan – Pakistan” event in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized that the country possesses natural resources worth trillions of dollars. However, terrorist activities, supported by external elements, continue to hinder progress.
Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist attacks, especially after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021. Law enforcement agencies and security forces have been the main targets, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terrorism in Pakistan rose sharply in January 2025, with a 42% increase in attacks compared to December 2024.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the most affected province, followed by Balochistan. In settled districts of KP, militants carried out 27 attacks, leading to 19 deaths, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants.
PM Shehbaz praised the security forces for their sacrifices in fighting terrorism in Pakistan. He stressed that future generations would not forgive if the nation failed to unite against this threat. He called on religious scholars to play a significant role in promoting unity.
The premier also noted that Pakistan could clear its debts by tapping into its natural resources. He urged national harmony, saying all citizens must work together to address economic and social challenges. He added that eradicating terrorism in Pakistan requires a collective effort.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the importance of ulema in fostering brotherhood and discouraging sectarianism. He called for prioritizing national interests over personal beliefs.
Speaking about Pakistan’s history, he reminded that the country was founded during Ramadan as an ideological Islamic state. He also mentioned that despite opposition from global powers, Pakistan became a nuclear nation in 1998. This, along with its strong military, ensures national security.
The prime minister reiterated that Quaid-e-Azam envisioned a Pakistan where both Muslims and minorities enjoyed religious freedom and protection. He stated that following the Holy Quran, the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the wisdom of great leaders would help Pakistan reclaim its global standing.
He further explained that true political independence is impossible without economic progress. He stressed that the state must ensure citizens can live according to Islamic principles and confirmed that no law can contradict Islamic teachings.
To secure the country’s future, PM Shehbaz promised financial support for youth education and skill development. He said the PM Youth Programme aims to provide better career opportunities. He advised young people to maintain discipline and contribute positively to society.
The prime minister also urged ulema to counter fake news and malicious propaganda by promoting research and constructive thinking. He emphasized the need for accurate information to prevent misinformation from fueling instability.
