PML-N leader Ishaq Dar has formally written to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday, requesting a two-day extension to submit nomination papers before the imminent general elections.
As the electoral machinery gears up with just over a month remaining until the polls, the ECP recently released the election schedule, clarifying the timeline for the electoral process.
According to the provided schedule, the window to file nomination papers for both national and provincial assembly seats began on the previous day and is set to continue until December 22
(Friday), with a subsequent period allocated for scrutiny from December 24 to December 30. Candidates must be accompanied by two voters from the same constituency to propose and second their nomination, as outlined by the electoral guidelines.
However, a key stipulation prohibits an individual from acting as a proposer or seconder for more than one candidate.
In his letter, shared on social media, Dar, serving as the chairman of the party’s election cell, highlighted the tight timeline for candidates.
He pointed out that the nomination filing period of three days seemed insufficient, especially considering the detailed documentation, including NOCs/NECs from various public sector departments.
Stressing the time-consuming nature of this process and the potential for rejection due to lapses, Dar appealed for a two-day extension to facilitate the numerous candidates aiming to participate in the elections.
He suggested that such an amendment to the schedule would not impact the polling date.
