TAUNSA: Police repelled a terrorist attack on a check-post in Jhangi, a town in Taunsa district, located on the border of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to District Police Officer (DPO) Dera Ghazi Khan, Syed Ali Kazmi, the attack occurred late Sunday night. Militants fired rockets at the Jhangi police check-post during the assault. In response, police used thermal cameras to track and retaliate against the attackers.
One suspected terrorist was shot dead in the counteroffensive, police confirmed. The other attackers managed to flee the area. Fortunately, no police personnel were harmed during the incident.
This marks the eighth terrorist attack this month in the border regions of Punjab and KP. Authorities say these repeated strikes highlight growing security threats in the region.
Before this incident, Punjab Police launched a major operation in Rahim Yar Khan’s Katcha area. During that mission, two notorious criminals were killed — Shah Mir alias Meera Kosh and Hakim Kosh. Both were wanted in connection with the murder of 12 police officials in Kacha Machka in 2024.
The tragic Machka attack occurred on August 22 last year, when armed robbers ambushed police vans returning from duty. The criminals used rocket launchers, killing 12 officers in the deadly terror attack.
Pakistan has seen a sharp rise in violent incidents in recent months. According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, the country is now ranked second among the most terrorism-affected nations. Previously, it held the fourth position.
The report further reveals a 45% increase in terror-related fatalities in 2024, rising from 748 deaths in 2023 to 1,081. This increase is one of the highest globally, highlighting the growing security crisis.
The recent terrorist attack in Taunsa, coupled with previous incidents, underscores the need for enhanced security measures in sensitive zones. Police operations and surveillance need to be intensified to counter these growing threats.
The ongoing wave of militant attacks continues to challenge law enforcement agencies, especially in border districts. With the country now facing a new wave of terrorism, vigilance and proactive policing remain the top priority.
