BANNU: A terrorists involved in earlier today attack on polio team that left a policeman dead, has been killed in police shootout in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday.
Earlier today policeman assigned to guard a polio vaccination team was martyred in a shooting near a migrant camp in Bannu.
This incident marks the second attack in recent days targeting polio workers and security personnel, following an earlier attack in Bajaur district that resulted in the deaths of a polio worker and a policeman. In response to these attacks, police have refused to participate in polio vaccination duties.
The slain officer, identified as Nur Alam from the Kamchashmi area of Domail, was stationed with a polio team when the attack occurred.
In the wake of the attack, police officers, along with local citizens and traders, staged a protest at Abdusattar Shah Bukhari Chowk. Police officials, including the District Police Officer (DPO), Superintendent of Police (SP), and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), arrived to negotiate with the protesters. The demonstrators demanded immediate justice for the attackers and threatened to continue their protest until their demands were met.
The police officials requested the protesters to end their demonstration, promising that the culprits would be apprehended within an hour.
Earlier this week, at least two police officers were injured in an attack on a police vehicle escorting a polio team in South Waziristan. The incident occurred in Wana and resulted in injuries to three individuals, including the two officers.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently launched a special anti-polio campaign aimed at eradicating the disease from Pakistan.
The campaign, which covers 115 districts, will involve vaccinating 30 million children under the age of five. From September 9 to 15, approximately 286,000 polio workers will go door-to-door to administer polio drops to children.
