ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi received a formal farewell guard of honor from a well-presented contingent of the Pakistan Army at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Friday. Dr. Alvi is set to conclude his term on March 9 (Saturday), paving the way for the election of a new president.
The election to choose the 14th president of Pakistan is scheduled for tomorrow (March 9). Former president Asif Ali Zardari and Mahmood Khan Achakzai are contenders for the position. Members of the four provincial assemblies, Senate, and National Assembly will participate in the voting process.
According to the constitutional provisions, the chief election commissioner (CEC) will serve as the returning officer for the presidential election. Polling in the national and provincial assemblies is slated from 10 am to 4 pm.

The election of the president is conducted through an electoral college, with voters required to present their identity cards from the national and provincial assemblies, as well as the Senate. Any markings on the ballot paper that could potentially identify the voter will render the vote invalid.
In the presence of candidates or their representatives, the presiding officer will open the ballot boxes, inspect the ballot papers, and discard any erroneous votes. The votes obtained by the candidates will be counted, sealed in separate bags, and the results recorded on Form 5, which will then be submitted to the returning officer, the chief election commissioner.
