ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari announces a special remission of 90 days in the sentences of prisoners, exercising his powers under the Constitution On the occasion of Independence Day.
The President of the State has approved the reduction of sentences under Article 45 of the Constitution. However, this reduction will not apply to prisoners convicted of murder, espionage, and anti-state activities. The sentence reduction will also not apply to those convicted of adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism.
The sentence reduction will not apply to those convicted of financial crimes, causing harm to the national treasury, as well as those convicted under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act, 2022.
The sentence reduction will apply to male prisoners above 65 years of age who have completed one-third of their sentence. Similarly, female prisoners above 60 years of age who have completed one-third of their sentence will also be eligible for the reduction. Women prisoners with children in jail will also benefit from the sentence reduction.
Furthermore, the sentence reduction will also apply to individuals under the age of 18 who have completed one-third of their sentence.”
