On the occasion of Navy Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid rich tributes to the Pakistan Navy. Both leaders lauded its courage, professionalism, and historic achievements — from the legendary Operation Somnath of 1965 to its modern multi-dimensional role in safeguarding maritime borders.
In his message, President Zardari said the Pakistan Navy would continue to guard the nation’s maritime frontiers with the same spirit of excellence that has always defined it. He expressed deep gratitude to the men and women of the force, calling them the country’s first line of defence at sea.
“This day reminds us of the daring feats of our naval warriors,” the president noted, adding that the sacrifices of martyrs would never be forgotten. He also saluted the ghazis, saying their steadfastness remained a source of national pride.
Recalling the 1965 war, President Zardari said the Pakistan Navy wrote a golden chapter in history by striking deep into enemy waters and disrupting their sense of security. Operation Somnath, he remarked, became a lasting symbol of audacity and skill, inspiring generations of sailors.
He said the Navy had since transformed into a modern, multi-dimensional force. Its responsibilities today go far beyond combat readiness, ranging from protecting vital sea trade routes to joining international peace missions and disaster relief operations. Referring to Exercise Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, he added that the Navy continues to demonstrate its ability to counter any hostile posturing along Pakistan’s coastline.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also praised the Pakistan Navy, calling its officers, soldiers, and personnel a source of pride for the nation. He said its history was filled with examples of bravery, with Operation Somnath holding a unique and memorable place.
“In this decisive operation, the Pakistan Navy attacked the Indian coastal city of Dwarka and destroyed its communication system,” the prime minister recalled. “It was not only proof of courage and skill but also a declaration of Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard maritime sovereignty.”
PM Shehbaz added that the victory of 1965 continues to strengthen the spirit of naval forces. Even after the war, the Navy maintained its critical role in ensuring the balance of power in the Arabian Sea. He said the force has repeatedly shown readiness and determination in modern times as well, sending a strong message that Pakistan can protect its maritime security at all costs.
The premier further highlighted the Navy’s contributions beyond defence. He said it plays an essential role in boosting the maritime sector, building ports, developing the blue economy, and ensuring the welfare of the seafaring community. He also appreciated the Navy’s part in humanitarian assistance, protecting communication channels, and participating in international exercises, which has enhanced Pakistan’s image globally.
“On Navy Day, we salute the past and present heroes of the Pakistan Navy,” Shehbaz concluded. “May Allah Almighty bless the Navy, the armed forces, and our country with progress, prosperity, and success. Long live Pakistan Navy! Long live Pakistan!”
