ISLAMABAD: In response to the directives from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to conduct intra-party polls, gaining approval from the party’s core committee.
The ECP, last Thursday, mandated the PTI to hold these polls within a 20-day timeframe, finalizing a decision that had been pending since September 13, following a response from a PTI lawyer to a show-cause notice.
A four-member bench, led by Nisar Durrani, presided over the case, with the ECP initially issuing a notice to the PTI on August 2, questioning potential disqualification for failing to conduct the required polls.
PTI lawyer Barrister Gohar argued that the intra-party elections were conducted before the party constitution amendment, and subsequently, the party withdrew these amendments.
This issue traces back to May of the previous year when the ECP issued a show-cause notice to the PTI chief for non-compliance with intra-party elections.
The deadline was extended, allowing the PTI to conduct the elections by June 13, 2022. However, despite the extension, the party failed to meet this deadline, despite the initially scheduled date for intra-party elections being June 13, 2021.
