PTI leaders sentenced in May 9 case

PTI leaders sentenced in May 9 case by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Saturday, in a major development linked to the 2023 unrest and the burning of police vehicles.

The verdict was announced by Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Manzar Ali Gul inside Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore, where the accused were already in custody. The case involved senior members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and related to violent incidents during the May 9, 2023 protests.

The court sentenced four senior PTI figures to 10 years in prison. Those convicted include Dr Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Mahmood ur Rashid, and Ejaz Chaudhry.

At the same time, the court acquitted former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi of all charges in the case.

The prosecution had presented statements from 37 witnesses during the trial, while the defence completed final arguments before the court reserved its decision. The case was filed against 22 accused in total over allegations linked to the burning of police vehicles during the unrest.

The ruling marks one of the key verdicts in cases arising from the May 9 incidents, which led to widespread arrests and legal proceedings across the country.
