An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad sentenced PTI MNA Abdul Latif and ten others to ten years in prison on Thursday. The punishment is linked to the May 9 violence case registered at Ramna police station.
The court found all 11 men guilty of serious terrorism-related offenses. These included attacking the police station, provoking unrest, and destroying public property during the violent protests that erupted after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan last year.
According to the official verdict, each convict received five years for attempted murder of police personnel. They were given four years for torching a motorcycle. They were also handed three years for preventing police from doing their job and one year for forming an illegal gathering to commit crimes.
The ATC judge addressed MNA Abdul Latif directly in court. He reminded him that the case involved strong evidence. At least 20 prosecution witnesses, including magistrates, testified against him. The judge said the lawmaker had been accused of leading an assault on the police station during the May 9 violence.
The court emphasized that protests must remain peaceful. The judge warned that targeting state institutions would lead to chaos. “You are accused of attacking police stations in Islamabad. If our own citizens attack police, the country becomes unlivable,” he stated.
This decision comes amid continued legal action against PTI members involved in the May 9 violence. Several party leaders and supporters are already facing charges tied to the nationwide unrest that broke out after Imran Khan’s arrest.
The May 9 violence has become a defining event for PTI’s political and legal troubles. The court’s strong stance signals zero tolerance for those who took part in the unrest. As cases continue, more verdicts related to the May 9 violence are expected in the coming months.
