RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) negotiation team has received approval to meet the party’s imprisoned founder, Imran Khan, at Adiala Jail today. Sources confirmed that the meeting will focus on ongoing talks with the government.
Insiders revealed that the PTI delegation plans to brief Khan on the first round of negotiations held on Monday. They will also seek his input on future strategies during the session scheduled for 2 PM.
Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government’s negotiation panel, confirmed on Tuesday that the PTI’s request to consult their leader had been granted.
The much-awaited negotiation process began earlier this week in Islamabad after months of intense political conflict between PTI and the government.
The first meeting included senior figures from both sides. The government was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Naveed Qamar, and MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar. PTI’s delegation included former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
The second session is set for January 2. PTI has announced it will present its demands in written form. These demands include the release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan, and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 incident.
This negotiation comes amid PTI’s threat to launch a civil disobedience movement if their demands remain unmet. The movement’s first phase involves withholding remittances, as previously urged by the jailed former prime minister.
Imran Khan had made this call to his supporters last month, urging them to resist the government through peaceful disobedience. The government’s willingness to engage in talks is seen as a significant step towards resolving the ongoing political crisis.
