Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro resigned from the Senate on Monday after openly voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which grants exclusive constitutional recognition to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the Pakistan Army.
Speaking on the floor of the Upper House, Senator Abro declared, “If anyone is mistaken, let me say that I came here to vote for Asim Munir, not for anyone else.” His remarks came moments before the Senate passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, aimed at restructuring Pakistan’s military and judicial frameworks, despite protests and a walkout by opposition members.
Alongside treasury benches, the Awami National Party (ANP), PTI-backed Saifullah Abro, and JUI-F’s Senator Ahmed Khan also voted in favour of the amendment. The move marks a historic moment in Pakistan’s parliamentary proceedings, as it further strengthens the constitutional and institutional framework of the armed forces.
In his address, Abro praised the Pakistan Army for its decisive victory against India in May 2025, stating that “India suffered a humiliating defeat, and though initially hesitant to admit it, the situation was eventually acknowledged by US President Donald Trump, who showed the highest level of respect to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.”
He added that the diplomatic recognition and honour given to Field Marshal Munir by the United States was unmatched, surpassing the respect shown to any Pakistani prime minister in history.
Concluding his address, Senator Abro announced his resignation from the Senate, citing the likelihood of disqualification for defying PTI’s official stance on the amendment. He also criticised his party for abandoning him during a challenging personal period, recalling that during the 26th Constitutional Amendment, ten members of his family, including his wife, were arrested while the party offered no support.
Abro’s bold stance and resignation have drawn nationwide attention, positioning him as one of the few PTI lawmakers to break ranks in favour of Pakistan’s armed forces and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
