The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has suspended the membership of Sher Afzal Marwat, a prominent leader who was elected to the National Assembly in the February 8 polls. The decision was made during a meeting between party founder Imran Khan and the top leadership in Adiala Jail.
On Thursday, PTI leaders met with Imran Khan and decided to suspend Marwat. According to party sources, a formal statement will be issued today. The sources claim that Marwat repeatedly violated party discipline and made several critical statements about party leaders over the past month. In one instance, he allegedly made “derogatory remarks” about Imran Khan. During the meeting, it was emphasized that no leader is above the party and that others would face similar consequences if they crossed party lines.
Marwat’s response to a show-cause notice was also found unsatisfactory. He had previously stated in London that Imran Khan did not want people to take to the streets. Marwat was removed from the PTI core and political committees in May by Secretary General Omar Ayub on Imran Khan’s orders after making a controversial statement about Saudi Arabia’s alleged involvement in the removal of Imran Khan as prime minister following a no-confidence motion by the joint opposition alliance.
Marwat, known for his controversial statements, accused both the United States and Saudi Arabia of conspiring to overthrow the PTI government. PTI publicly distanced itself from his remarks, which Marwat dismissed as his personal opinion while maintaining his stance.
Marwat also expressed dissatisfaction with party leaders, claiming deprivation of the Public Accounts Committee chairmanship. He alleged that Senate opposition leader Shibli Faraz informed Imran Khan that the Saudi ambassador had reservations about his nomination for the apex parliamentary committee.
