Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to to take actin against members of the National and provincial assemblies who have defected from the party.
More than 20 lawmakers who switched their allegiances will face repercussions as PTI initiates the process to file references against them.
Malik Ahmad Bhachar, the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly from the Sunni Ittehad Council, stressed the significance of upholding political integrity and party principles. He condemned the act of switching loyalties, highlighting its detrimental effects on the democratic process and representative governance.
The references against the defected lawmakers will be formally submitted to the respective assembly speakers. However, Bhachar warned that if the speakers fail to take action, the matter will be escalated to the judiciary for intervention.
“We have initiated an inquiry to expose those indulging in opportunistic political maneuvers through defection,” declared Bhachar.
The decision to pursue action against turncoat lawmakers is grounded in articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, which outline the qualifications and disqualifications for assembly members. According to Bhachar, those who switch their loyalties violate these constitutional provisions and are thereby ineligible for assembly membership.
