RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati was rearrested on Tuesday by Taxila police shortly after his release from Attock jail. Swati’s re-arrest occurred just as he stepped outside the jail premises early this morning.
Sources indicate that an anti-terrorism court had granted bail to Swati the previous day in multiple cases related to PTI’s October 4 protest. Alongside PTI founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Swati and other party leaders were named in cases filed on October 8. The charges stemmed from a protest incident in Islamabad that included the tragic death of Constable Abdul Hameed.
PTI leaders face charges under 12 sections, including attempted murder, arson, assault on state institutions, and violence against police. Other prominent PTI figures named in the case include Omar Ayub, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, PTI Islamabad President Aamir Mughal, Malik Hafeez Ur Rehman Tipu, and approximately 400 other unidentified individuals.
The case was registered at the Noon Police Station in Islamabad on behalf of the state, following Constable Hameed’s death. Allegedly attacked by protestors at D-Chowk while performing his duties, the constable was reportedly subjected to violence and later succumbed to his injuries.
The FIR accuses PTI leaders, including Khan and Gandapur, of inciting violence against law enforcement, with claims that protesters assaulted officers with sticks, stones, and iron rods, tearing police uniforms in the process.
