ISLAMABAD: Islamabad’s red zone has been extended to now include Faisal Avenue, as announced by the Islamabad police on Friday. This expansion, from Ataturk Avenue to Faisal Avenue, comes at the request of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad and is aimed at upholding Section 144 to deter potential breaches.
The decision to widen the red zone is viewed by many as a proactive step to forestall planned protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Earlier in view of today’s protest by the PTI against rigging in the general elections, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the city’s administration have dug up trenches in front of the National Press Club.
Earlier, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration rejected a protest application from the PTI, citing the enforcement of Section 144 within the city. Protests of any nature are prohibited within city limits under Section 144, as determined by the administration.
Section 144 grants the district administration the power to prohibit protests for a specified duration.
