Punjab Extends Section 144 Across Province After Deadly TLP Protests

Punjab Extends Section 144 Across Province After Deadly TLP Protests — The Punjab government has extended Section 144 for seven more days following violent Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests that left at least three people dead and dozens injured.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department confirmed the decision, stating that the extension came on the recommendation of the provincial cabinet during a special meeting on law and order. The extended order bans gatherings of four or more people across Punjab in an effort to prevent further unrest.

The move follows the provincial government’s request to the federal authorities to impose a ban on TLP after its workers clashed with law enforcement agencies in Lahore. The violent confrontation erupted between the night of October 12 and October 13 when police dismantled a TLP protest camp in Muridke.

The clashes turned deadly, resulting in the deaths of three TLP workers and a passerby, while over 30 civilians sustained injuries. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari revealed that 1,648 police personnel were also wounded, some with gunshot injuries, during the confrontation.

An FIR has been registered against TLP chief Saad Hussain Rizvi and other senior leaders at the Rawat Police Station in Rawalpindi. Authorities said Rizvi’s whereabouts remain unknown after the dispersal of protesters in Muridke.

The Punjab Home Department spokesperson clarified that the extension of Section 144 was a preventive measure aimed at restoring peace and protecting citizens. He noted that large public gatherings could become potential targets for terrorists amid the prevailing tense environment.

Under the new restrictions, all types of public gatherings, rallies, and protests are banned across the province until October 24. However, exceptions will be made for wedding ceremonies, funerals, and burial processions.

On Friday, the Punjab government placed security forces on high alert across all districts, anticipating fresh unrest after TLP’s Balochistan chapter called on supporters to gather at Lahore’s Data Darbar following Friday prayers.

Officials say the extension of Section 144 is intended to deter further violence and ensure law and order amid fears of renewed TLP mobilization.
