Punjab Green Tractor Scheme Expands as Farmers Receive Major Subsidy Support

Punjab Green Tractor Scheme

Punjab’s Punjab Green Tractor Scheme is showing early positive results as the provincial government expands agricultural reforms aimed at modernising farming and supporting farmers with advanced machinery.

The programme is part of a broader push toward farm mechanisation in Punjab, where authorities are introducing Green Tractors, combined harvesters, and Super Seeders to improve productivity and reduce manual labour in agriculture.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, subsidies of Rs1 million are being provided on 9,500 high-power tractors. In addition, 10,000 tractors in the 50 to 65 horsepower range are being distributed with a subsidy of Rs500,000 per unit.

The chief minister has also directed officials to expand the Punjab Green Tractor Scheme further, with plans to distribute 20,000 additional tractors in the next fiscal year.

Under the upcoming phase of the programme, subsidy levels will increase significantly. High-horsepower tractors will receive up to Rs1.5 million in support, while mid-range tractors will get Rs750,000 in subsidy, aiming to reduce financial pressure on small and medium farmers.

For the first time in Punjab, the government has introduced an interest-free loan programme of up to Rs30 million for the purchase of 12 types of modern agricultural machinery. This initiative is designed to help farmers adopt advanced equipment through easy financing.

Officials say nearly 200 high-tech combined harvesters have already been acquired through interest-free financing. In addition, 50 modern harvesters were used for wheat harvesting for the first time, improving efficiency and reducing delays during the harvest season.

To discourage crop residue burning and reduce air pollution, the government has distributed 5,000 Super Seeders among rice farmers. These machines were used across 1.4 million acres of land, showing strong results in both environmental protection and agricultural output.

The second phase of the Super Seeder initiative has also been approved, with another 5,000 units set to be distributed to farmers across the province.

Officials say the goal of the Punjab Green Tractor Scheme and related reforms is to modernise agriculture, cut production costs, and increase per-acre yield through technology-driven farming practices.

The Punjab government is also supporting small farmers by providing access to modern machinery on a rental basis, ensuring that even those with limited resources can benefit from mechanised farming.
